So, yes, a bit of spam/pimpage. My friend Emmy Jackson wrote Empty Cradle, and yours truly designed the book. I helped with a few other odds and ends very early in the process, which is why I'm so damn proud of him for finishing it and putting it up for sale.

It's a good book, well worth the read. Go forth! Buy!

IN A FUTURE WHERE NATIONS DON’T EXIST AND LIFE HAS A SPECIFIC VALUE, A YOUNG WOMAN LEADS A PERILOUS JOURNEY ACROSS THE FRAGMENTED REMAINS OF A ONCE-GREAT COUNTRY

Ivy Aniram can't afford to make stupid mistakes. A scavenger in a post-apocalyptic America, where long-distance travel can be deadly to the few who attempt it, Ivy is a rare commodity—a fertile woman untouched by the epidemic “Empty Cradle." When she's ambushed and nearly killed thanks to an offer of trust she shouldn't have extended, the villagers who save her demand a hefty price in return—a baby born of her womb. She may have tumbled out of the frying pan and into the fire.

Corey Sanderson, a farmboy who's eager to escape his bleak rural existence at all costs, proves to be Ivy's salvation. She agrees to take him on a treacherous 2,300-mile trek through hostile terrain to deliver a mysterious piece of cargo. For the injured Ivy to complete this nearly impossible task, she's got to trust Corey, but his youthful enthusiasm makes him both an asset and a liability in a world of scarce supplies, determined bandits, equipment-stealing gleaners, and mutated, half-human “biters." The other passengers Ivy takes on—a traveling historian with a mysterious past, a cheerfully abrasive mercenary and her deer-shapeshifter companion—add their own unique complications. Though she's the driver and travel-master, Ivy quickly learns that getting her cargo to its destination isn't going to happen without their help.

Now available for purchase.

Both fics are nearing completion, and I should be able to get them to my recipients in the next couple of weeks. This is good, because it means I can start stressing out over my Dean/Cas big bang story

Yay?

I have one fic most of the way written, and I have a pretty good idea of where I'm going with the other fic. Also, I made my donation of $150 to Doctors without Borders, and as soon as I remember to grab the screenshots of my donation and the match request from my work PC, I will post both to show that my fic winners' donations were tripled. Yay!!!

I'm offering fic up for bid at [community profile] help_japan, and my offer post is here.

The auction closes tomorrow at noon, GMT, and while I have some bids, I'm greedy and want more. So I'm sweetening the pot a little.

I'm already planning to donate $75 to Doctors without Borders, because at that level, my company will do an exact matching donation.

In addition, I will match the total of the final bids (up to $150) and add that to my planned $75 donation. What this means for bidders is that not only will their donation be matched by me, but it will be matched by my employer as well.

Come on, folks -- how can you resist a deal like this? Your donation would be matched 2 to 1, which is pretty darn cool.
elementalv: Opening shot of Sherlock with "flashfic on Dreamwidth" added. (sh_flashfic)
Yay! [community profile] sherlock_flashfic isn’t limited to the BBC series -- it will take entries based on the 2009 movie, the Granada series and canon as well, and it goes live today! Go check out the profile page, which has all the info you could possibly need (until we find out that it doesn’t, anyway).

Title: Time
Author: elementalv
Rating: PG
Characters: Dean and Castiel
Notes: 100 words. This will be a fractured story told along the non-contiguous lines of Soul Surrender, and it’s probably going to be a bit darker.
Summary: Dean doesn’t know what day it is.

Dean doesn’t know what day it is. For that matter, he’s not entirely certain what “day” means anymore. He’s in a place where time doesn’t seem to mean what he thought it meant. Shit happens randomly, like Castiel can’t quite figure out linear time‘s rules. It’s possible he can’t. Assuming he is what he says he is, an angel, maybe time means something different, if it means anything at all. Add to that the fact that Castiel is batshit insane, and Dean has a situation where he doesn’t know what day it is.

He wonders if he ever will again.

Title: The Altar of Dean Winchester
Author: elementalv
Rating: NC-17
Pairing: Dean/Castiel
[community profile] kink_bingo Squares: worship, exposure/striptease, tattoos/tattooing, dirty talk (a postage stamp)
Notes: This goes AU just before the end of 5.16: instead of finding a liquor store and drinking it, Castiel finds a different way to cope.
Summary: Castiel was made to worship.

Author: elementalv
Rating: NC-17
Pairing: Missouri Moseley/John Winchester
Fandom: Supernatural
[community profile] kink_bingo Square: sleepy/unconscious
Notes: Smooches to Malnpudl for doing a late-night beta on this.
Summary: She’s halfway between awake and asleep, and she’s too comfortable to even consider acknowledging him when he crawls into bed behind her, smelling of the road and maybe too much whisky.

For those of you who don't know me, I've been active in fandom since 2002, though not so much lately, because I'm working toward a master's degree in written communication. I'm currently taking a class called "Community Communication," and for the most recent assignment, we were asked to identify a communication issue in community with which we are very familiar. I chose to look at racism within fandom, based on RaceFail '09 and, more recently, Big Bang RaceFail of '10.

The follow-up paper (which is due a week from tomorrow) is to develop an action plan on how to use communication tools to address the given issue. Below the cut is a list of questions about perceptions of racism in fandom as well as questions about how we respond to such incidents. Anonymous commenting is permitted (though I'll be logging IP addresses), but if you would prefer to respond privately and receive an answer, please feel free to PM me.

I want to thank [livejournal.com profile] amazonziti, who was extremely helpful in both reviewing and answering the questions below, and [personal profile] bossymarmalade, who also provided assistance. Finally, if you think this is a worthwhile survey to complete and conversation to have, please give it signal boost at your own journal.

Survey: Racism in Fandom )

If you have anything to add, please include it in a comment below or in a private message to me.

Thank you.

Title: Mirror, Mirror
Author: elementalv
Rating: NC-17
Pairing: Dean/Castiel
Notes/Spoilers: Missing scene from SPN 5.18. Written for [community profile] kink_bingo for the prompt of mirror.
Summary: To be honest, Dean hadn’t thought it through, which, again to be honest, was like saying fish lived in water. Dean never thought shit like this through.

Spoilers/Notes: Post-ep for 5.18; nothing specific for the episode, but it does assume the reader has seen the episodes up through 5.18, because the story doesn’t make a lot of sense otherwise.
Summary: Cas knows there’s a trap, one that goes beyond the obvious, but he isn’t sure what it might be.

Title: Athos Ascendant
Author: elementalv
Rating: PG-13
Notes: Gen, roughly 4,650 words, Vegas tag. I started this last year, shortly after Vegas aired and finished it when I saw [livejournal.com profile] telesilla’s [livejournal.com profile] sga_santa request post. If I’d finished in time, I would have entered this for SGA Santa Madness, but I didn’t, so here we are.
Summary: Had it not been for Halling’s desire to learn from the inheritors of the City of the Ancestors, Teyla never would have treated with them in the first place.

This is actually something I can do that's relatively pain-free, now that my Web site is updated. Am I bragging about that? Um...yes. Not that I have much right to, considering it was my own fault it fell so far behind to begin with, but hell. It was a lot of work to get it updated, and even though I still need to do more work, the worst of it is over.

Note that the links below (38, all together, which is kind of weird, because I didn't think I was that productive in 2009) lead to Elemental Vision rather than to LJ or Dreamwidth. This is a mirror of a post at LJ.
